HEALTH TESTING:

Prior to breeding, Fennel was issued CHIC #183180. DM clear, OFA echo (x3), eyes (x2), and thyroid (x2) normal. Full dentition. Holter monitored on 6/15/2022 and on 11/20/2023 with zero VPC or other abnormalities noted, and on 6/5/2025 with 1 single VPC observed.

Sean was issued CHIC #42506. DM clear, OFA echo (x5), eyes (x2), and thyroid (x2) normal and 1x equivocal. Full dentition. Holter monitoring had not yet become common while Sean was alive; however, health of his previous offspring and relatives has been closely tracked by his breeder/owner Rita Stackable (fmr. Rice). Of the 17 puppies he previously produced, only one experienced sudden death. Sean was euthanized in 2014 following a ruptured disc at T13/L1. He was 11 years old.

ABOUT THIS LITTER

We are hopeful that Fennel will have a smooth, easy second whelp, as she did with her first. Her fantastic mothering was a driving force behind electing to breed her a second time. We are incredibly excited by this match for many other reasons as well, including:

1. A distant line breeding which still maintains diversity and preserves an uncommon pedigree. Sean’s sire, Valimir, is also Fennel’s 7th generation great-grand sire. Despite being from an earlier era, Sean had multiple rounds of health testing, which enables us to focus on both our goals of preserving rare pedigrees while also breeding away from known health issues. Sean only had 2 other litters, and his total descendants, including grand+ puppies, is only 40. There is good longevity in the line, with most living between 11 and 14 years.

2. Conformationally, Sean was a very substantial male and produced lots of substance, which will help balance out our more refined dogs. He has a really lovely moderate croup, which will not double up on Fennel’s steep croup. He was a very sound mover, which should help us continue to produce nice, fluid movement. Fennel and Sean complement each other overall in type, and both are very functional borzoi.

3. This match should concentrate on running dogs who will enjoy competing in lure coursing. Sean has 4 litter-sisters who did well in AKC coursing, including field champions. Through his dam line, he also brings in Barb Ewing (Kirov Borzoi) pedigrees that are solid running dogs new to our pedigree. Fennel’s own enthusiasm on the lure, which has been surpassed by even greater lure drive in the puppies in her first litter, leaves us hopeful for dogs who will have a lot of fun on the field.

4. We expect super sweetheart temperaments that will be patient and kind. Both parents are described as easygoing and a joy to live with.

This litter will be raised at Saxafrax, using Avidog and Puppy Culture techniques. We match puppies to homes based on what each home is looking for through careful evaluation as the litter grows.
